ABOUT THE COMPANY

Taylor Prime Labels and Packaging is part of Taylor Corporation, a recognized leader in the printing and packaging industry with more than 50 years of private ownership. Taylor Prime Labels delivers a wide range of flexible packaging and labeling solutions through a customer-focused approach, supported by the strength and scalability of a major national enterprise. The company specializes in customized pricing, inventory control programs, and nationwide distribution, catering primarily to clients with custom print needs.

CHALLENGES

With operations focused heavily on producing custom, non-catalog products, Taylor Prime Labels faced significant challenges in production scheduling and capacity planning. The company’s previous scheduling software was not designed to handle the complexity and variability of their production environment. This resulted in:

  • A highly manual scheduling process
  • Limited visibility into work-in-progress and production capacity
  • Frequent missed tickets and late shipments
  • Extended lead times—sometimes as long as 16 weeks
  • Excessive material waste due to inefficient changeovers
  • A backlog that hindered the company’s ability to scale with customer demand

Taylor Prime Labels needed a better way to manage scheduling and material planning across multiple facilities while maintaining efficiency and meeting customer expectations.

SOLUTION

Taylor Prime Labels implemented Batched, Amtech’s advanced planning and scheduling solution, in tandem with Label Traxx ERP. Though Amtech recommends deploying Batched six months after Label Traxx to allow for historical data to accumulate, Taylor took a bold approach and implemented both simultaneously.
Key features utilized by the Taylor team include:

  • Automated Scheduling: Optimizes production order sequences to reduce changeovers and ensure timely order fulfillment.
  • Capacity Planning: Provides real-time insight into machine utilization and production lead times.
  • Material Planning and Availability Dashboards: Enables advanced projection of material needs and streamlines procurement.
  • Performance Monitoring and Reporting: Offers BI dashboards and data visualization tools to support data-driven decisions.
  • Multi-Plant Scheduling: One scheduler now manages production across three facilities—a task previously requiring three full-time staff.

Implementation was supported by Amtech’s responsive professional services team, with weekly meetings helping to identify and resolve issues in real time.

BENEFITS & IMPACT

Since implementing Batched, Taylor Prime Labels has seen measurable improvements in key operational areas:

  • Lead Times Reduced: Standard lead times were cut from 5–6 weeks to just 3 weeks.
  • Backlog Minimized: Unscheduled tickets dropped from 50–60% to just 21%, most of which are incoming orders.
  • Improved Scheduling Efficiency: One person now schedules for three facilities.
  • Waste Reduction: Streamlined changeovers reduced setup times to under 30 minutes, minimizing material waste.
  • Enhanced Visibility: Real-time dashboards provide the entire team—from prepress to production—with full visibility into scheduling, materials, and performance.
  • Data-Driven Decisions: Scheduling is now based on real-time capacity and demand, enabling better responsiveness to rush orders and improved customer satisfaction.

Operators and team members have responded positively, especially to the visibility provided by Batched, and continue to uncover ways to optimize usage.

“Since adopting Batched, we’ve reduced lead times, increased scheduling efficiency, and gained full visibility into our production pipeline. What used to take three schedulers, I can now manage alone across multiple facilities—with confidence.”
— Taylen King, Master Scheduler, Taylor Prime Labels

FUTURE PLANS

Taylor Prime Labels is expanding its use of Batched across additional facilities under the Prime Labels umbrella. Upcoming priorities include:

  • Material Availability Dashboard: Full adoption to support predictive ordering and reduce aged inventory.
  • Label Traxx v9.3 Integration: Leveraging new features like assigning stock to equipment for deeper optimization.
  • Continuous Refinement: As new equipment is added, the team plans to evolve scheduling rules and material planning models.

With ongoing support from Amtech, Taylor Prime Labels is committed to further enhancing its scheduling, automation, and supply chain visibility—ensuring continued growth and operational excellence.
