ABOUT THE CUSTOMER
American Label, based in Salt Lake City, Utah, has been a pioneer in the label printing industry since 1967. It was the first company in Utah to produce pressure-sensitive labels and later became the first flexographic label producer in the state to adopt direct-to-plate imaging. With nearly 40 years of experience, American Label operates eight narrow web presses in a 20,000-square-foot facility and employs 35 staff members. The company is a leading label manufacturer in the Intermountain West, recognized for high-quality products and exceptional service.
CHALLENGES
Despite its strong reputation and growth, American Label faced several challenges:
- Outdated business management software: The previous system was originally designed for sheetfed offset printing and later adapted for flexographic printing, making it inefficient and difficult to use.
- Complex quoting process: Customer service representatives had to navigate through 11 different screens just to generate a customer quote, leading to delays and inefficiencies.
- Employee resistance to change: Transitioning from an old, familiar system to a new platform posed a potential challenge in employee adoption.
- Manual inventory and purchasing processes: Ordering label stock and tracking inventory required time-consuming manual tasks.
- Lack of mobility for sales teams: Sales personnel had limited access to critical business data while in the field, restricting their ability to respond quickly to customer inquiries.
SOLUTION
In 2002, American Label implemented the Label Traxx print business management system to address these challenges. Key aspects of the implementation included:
- Streamlined workflow: Label Traxx provided an intuitive and efficient user experience, reducing the number of steps required to generate quotes.
- Employee engagement and training: Tailored Solutions helped transfer old files into the new system, making it easier for employees to compare and transition smoothly.
- Enhanced inventory management: The system’s integration with Fasson Connect enabled automated purchasing and receiving of label stock, eliminating manual processes.
- Sales team empowerment: Outside sales representatives were equipped with remote access to the system, allowing them to log in from home or customer sites.
- Network-friendly integration: The system was easy to deploy across terminals on the shop floor and throughout operations, ensuring seamless data collection and workflow management.
BENEFITS AND IMPACT
The adoption of Label Traxx brought substantial benefits to American Label:
- Increased efficiency: Faster quoting times and improved workflow reduced customer response times and enhanced service.
- Improved inventory control: Barcoding and Fasson Connect integration saved 30-60 minutes per day in purchasing and receiving operations.
- Simplified data entry: Press operators could enter job details quickly and scan roll stock for accurate inventory tracking.
- Enhanced profitability tracking: Daily job costing reports allowed management to monitor profitability and make data-driven decisions.
- Greater mobility and customer service: Sales teams could access real-time data from anywhere, improving responsiveness and customer satisfaction.
Jim Palamides, General Manager of American Label, reflects on the transformation: “Label Traxx has made it easier to stay on top of a business that becomes more competitive and complex every year. The transition was smooth, and the benefits have been clear from the start.”
Through its adoption of Label Traxx, American Label has successfully modernized its operations, ensuring continued leadership in the label printing industry.
